The President of Hungary went to the Vatican this morning to meet Pope Francis and she didn’t come empty-handed. Her post shared on her social media page states that the gift shows the richness of Hungarian culture and our respect for tradition, while it can also be part of the Holy Father’s clothing.

The embroidered priest’s stole was designed by Dr Anna Illés Károlyné Botyánszky, Master of Folk Art, and was completed by the joint work of several women embroiderers, it was also blessed by Cardinal Péter Erdő.

The motifs on the stole reflect the world of the best-known Kalocsa, Békés szűcs, Nógrád palóc, Matyó, Sióagárd and the so-called gentleman’s decoration. The last stitches were made by Katalin Novák.
